Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Cosmetic Surgery Abroad

15 February 2025·7 min read

Before committing to cosmetic surgery abroad, the quality of the answers you receive to specific questions tells you everything you need to know about a clinic. A well-run, patient-centred facility will answer your questions thoroughly and transparently. Evasive, vague, or pressured responses are warning signs that shouldn't be ignored.

Here are the questions every patient should ask — and what to look for in the answers.

Questions About the Surgeon

What are your qualifications and board certifications? Your surgeon should be board-certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery in their home country and ideally hold international credentials as well. In Turkey, look for membership of TPCD (Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery).

How many procedures like mine have you performed? Volume matters. A surgeon who has performed hundreds of rhinoplasties or breast augmentations has developed pattern recognition and technical refinement that a less experienced surgeon simply hasn't had the opportunity to build.

Can I see before-and-after photos from patients with similar anatomy and goals? Generic galleries are not sufficient. Ask to see cases that specifically resemble your own situation — similar nose shape, similar body type, similar goal. This gives you the most realistic expectation of what your surgeon can achieve for you.

Will I be consulting with the surgeon who will perform my procedure? Some clinics use patient coordinators or junior staff for consultations, with the senior surgeon only meeting the patient on the day of surgery. Insist on a consultation with your actual surgeon, either virtually or in person.

Questions About the Clinic

Is the clinic internationally accredited? Ask specifically about JCI accreditation or equivalent. If the answer is vague, ask for the accreditation certificate or the registration number that would allow you to verify it independently.

What hospital is affiliated with the clinic in case of emergency? Even the best clinics must have a protocol for emergencies. Know which nearby hospital the clinic partners with, and ensure that hospital is also of a credible standard.

What languages do your staff speak? You should be able to communicate clearly with your care team throughout your stay — not just with the patient coordinator on arrival, but with nursing staff throughout recovery.

Questions About Costs and What's Included

What exactly is included in the quoted price? Ask for a written breakdown. Confirm whether anaesthesia, post-operative garments, prescribed medications, follow-up consultations, and accommodation transfers are included. Many headline prices exclude one or more of these.

What happens if the surgery takes longer than expected, or if I need additional procedures? Some clinics charge for additional surgical time or for complications discovered during the procedure. Understand this upfront.

Is revision surgery covered if I'm unhappy with the result? Ask explicitly whether the price includes any revision guarantee and under what conditions a revision would be offered. A clinic with confidence in its outcomes is generally willing to discuss this.

Questions About Recovery and Aftercare

How long do I need to stay in-country before it's safe to fly home? The answer varies by procedure and surgeon. Get a clear minimum stay requirement and don't accept vague answers like "it depends."

What post-operative support is provided once I return home? Remote follow-up, access to the surgeon by video consultation, and a protocol for communicating with your local GP or healthcare provider are all signs of a clinic that takes long-term patient wellbeing seriously.

What should I do if I experience a complication after returning home? Know in advance who to contact and what the clinic's protocol is for managing post-operative issues that arise after you've returned to your home country.

What Good Answers Look Like

The best clinics answer every question above promptly, in writing, and without evasion. They don't pressure you to book before you've finished your due diligence. They connect you directly with your surgeon for consultation rather than keeping the relationship at the coordinator level. And they proactively offer information rather than waiting to be asked.

If a clinic meets that standard, that's a strong positive signal. If it doesn't, walk away — regardless of the price.
