Non-Surgical Aesthetic Treatments Abroad: What's Worth Considering

22 April 2025·6 min read

While surgical procedures dominate the medical tourism conversation, a growing number of patients are travelling internationally for non-surgical aesthetic treatments. The range of treatments available — and the price differential compared to home markets — makes this a genuinely interesting option for some patients. But not every non-surgical treatment is equally suited to a medical tourism model.

The Non-Surgical Landscape

Non-surgical aesthetic treatments span a broad range, from quick, low-commitment procedures to more complex, multi-session protocols. The main categories include:

Injectables: Botulinum toxin (Botox and equivalents) for wrinkle relaxation and facial contouring; dermal fillers for volume restoration, lip enhancement, and facial structure; and biostimulators (such as Profhilo or Sculptra) for skin quality improvement.

Energy-based treatments: Laser resurfacing, radiofrequency skin tightening, HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound), cryolipolysis (fat freezing), and similar devices.

Medical aesthetics: Chemical peels, mesotherapy, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy, and medical-grade skincare protocols.

Dental aesthetics: Veneers, whitening, and smile makeovers — one of the most commonly sought non-surgical treatments abroad.

What Makes Non-Surgical Treatments Worth Travelling For

The primary driver for non-surgical treatments abroad is cost. Botox in Turkey, for example, can cost 40 to 60% less than equivalent treatments in the UK. More elaborate treatments — full facial filler protocols, laser packages, or dental makeovers — offer even more significant savings.

Beyond cost, certain treatments are genuinely sought abroad because of the availability of specific products. Some biostimulators, thread lifting techniques, or skincare protocols available in Turkey or Eastern Europe are not available in the UK, or require specialist practitioners who are harder to find domestically.

Treatments That Are Well-Suited to Medical Tourism

Dental aesthetics — composite veneers, porcelain veneers, and full smile makeovers — are among the most compelling non-surgical treatments to seek abroad. A complete veneer set that costs £15,000 to £20,000 in London can be achieved for £3,000 to £6,000 in Turkey, with genuinely comparable quality from accredited dental practices.

Comprehensive filler or skin rejuvenation packages — multiple session treatments performed over a short, concentrated period — work well in a medical tourism context. A patient can undergo a full facial rejuvenation protocol over 3 to 5 days.

Laser treatments — particularly intense pulsed light (IPL), fractional CO2 laser, and skin resurfacing — are available from well-equipped clinics abroad at a fraction of UK prices.

Treatments That Are Less Suited to Medical Tourism

Not all non-surgical treatments lend themselves to a travel model. Treatments that require multiple sessions spread over weeks or months — such as body contouring programmes, hair loss treatments, or progressive skincare protocols — are harder to structure around a single visit abroad.

Additionally, injectables like Botox are relatively quick, inexpensive, and widely available in most countries. Unless the patient is combining injectables with other treatments during a trip, the cost savings may not justify the travel overhead.

Safety Considerations for Non-Surgical Treatments Abroad

Non-surgical doesn't mean risk-free. Complications from fillers — including vascular occlusion, which can have serious consequences — do occur. The safety of any non-surgical treatment abroad depends on the practitioner's training, the quality of the products used, and the availability of emergency management if a complication occurs.

For any injectable treatment abroad, confirm that the practitioner is a qualified medical professional (physician, dentist, or nurse with appropriate injectable training), that the products used are from internationally recognised brands, and that the clinic has a clear protocol for managing complications.
